• The Mercedes-AMG GT debuts ahead of the fabled Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
  • The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT adds an available second row of seats to make space for two more passengers.
  • The AMG GT 63 uses a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 to send either 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque or 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

In a world where crossovers and SUVs are king, Mercedes-AMG is launching a second generation of its AMG GT coupe. As happens with most cars, this second-generation grows in size and space, though Mercedes insists it was to meet the needs of the GT customer.

One of those needs must have been more interior seating, as this second-generation GT offers a second row of seats to haul around two more passengers.

Same Engine, More Power

Powering this AMG GT is still a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8. That said, this 4.0-liter comes in two different power levels, depending on which GT you purchase. The AMG GT 55’s 4.0-liter sends 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque through a nine-speed automatic. Jumping up to the GT 63 squeezes 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque out of the same 4.0-liter mill.

Power travels through the nine-speed automatic transmission to the fully-variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

More Body, More Room

Surrounding this 4.0-liter V8 is a whole new skin. The bodywork is stretched 6.4 inches longer than the previous generation GT, to span a total of 186.1 inches. It’s also a half-inch narrower than the outgoing model and measures 78.1 inches wide.

Rounding out the measurements, this new AMG GT sits at 53.3 inches tall, making it nearly 3 inches taller than the previous model.

That extra length and height make sense considering the most significant change to this GT program. Mercedes says that 2+2 seating is available for those that have friends, or want the option to bring more than just one person with them out on a drive.

Mercedes-AMG notes, however, the rear seats are limited. The company suggests that those above five feet tall won’t fit in the rear of the AMG GT too comfortably. That might put a damper on your dreams of hauling around three of your buddies.

Familiar Insides

Aside from the available 2+2 seating, the AMG GT’s interior follows the rest of the Mercedes-Benz interior design trend. A massive 11.9-inch media screen sits in the middle of the dashboard, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sitting ahead of the driver. This second-gen GT also gets the MBUX digital assistant and an optional head-up display.

Naturally, you’ll also get all the luxurious appointments you’d expect from a high-end Mercedes product. The available multi-contour seats change their bolster shapes depending on your drive mode to give you the best seat support for the situation. Mercedes will also stuff massagers into these seats as an optional package.

Underpinnings

All of this rides on a set of 20-inch wheels, regardless of model choice. Responsible for controlling those wheels is a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear suspension.

Shaving weight where it can, Mercedes opted to make every suspension link out of forged aluminum. While this certainly helps with overall weight, this also cuts down on the ever-important unsprung mass.

This might not be the most creative suspension solution, but Mercedes didn’t stop there. The next-gen AMG GT comes with the company’s Active Ride Control system. This eschews the traditional stabilizer bar and uses interconnected dampers and hydraulics to control body roll. This also helps the AMG GT control brake dive when you’re loading up the brakes into a corner.

Big Brakes

And you will load up the brakes. This AMG GT features composite brake rotors to further cut unsprung mass. The AMG GT’s front rotors span 15.4 inches, with 14.2-inch rotors sitting at the back. Clamping those front rotors is a set of six-piston calipers. Single-piston calipers cling to the rears but also handle electronic parking brake duties.

If you want to see this in person, you’ll have to head to an event like Monterey Car Week. At least, that’s the case until next year. Mercedes says it plans on moving the new AMG GT to dealers within the first half of 2024.

The company didn’t note any price, but it will likely fall around the same as the current AMG SL variants. With the Mercedes-AMG SL 55 starting at $141,000, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the similarly equipped AMG GT start close to that price.
