Genshin Impact Fontaine: The complete Lore Guide before the Version 4.0 update

Here is a compilation of lore on what we know so far about Fontaine!

Genshin Impact will be releasing a brand new region and the next installation of the game’s main storyline in the upcoming Version 4.0 which will now center around the region of Fontaine. With new stories and lore on the way and questions to be answered, it is a good time to compile the lore surrounding Fontaine and what we know so far regarding the Nation of Justice. Here is a complete lore guide about Fontaine and all the existing information we have received so far in Genshin Impact.

Genshin Impact Fontaine: Current Hydro Archon “Focalors”

The current Hydro Archon of Fontaine is Focalors (Furina). She became the Archon shortly after the previous Archon, Lord of Amrita, died during the Cataclysm that occurred 500 years ago. Focalors is the second Archon to be in charge of the Nation of Justice.

“My ideals have no stains.
I must correct you. People here bear no sins in the eyes of the gods… Only laws and the Tribunal can judge someone.
They can judge even me. So praise my magnificence and purity.”

—Focalors, in the Varunada Lazurite Gemstone Ascension

From the various item descriptions, notes, and most prominently Nahida’s voice line, has been concluded that Furina/Focalors is someone that has a ‘unique personality’ with a flamboyant attitude and who enjoys the extravaganza of the Courtroom. Under the influence of Furina, the Hydro Archon, Judgments are a form of performance.  Truth and delusion are equal parts in the performance, and so are drama and tragedy. The Hydro Archon lives for the surprising twists and turns in the courtroom.

Despite her immersing herself in such an atmosphere and enjoying such a spectacle in the Courtroom, she is wary of the ‘Divine’ and does not wish to antagonize them, as mentioned by Dainsleif in the Travail trailer. The divine in question is, of course, Celestia. This leads us to believe that Furina is an Archon that genuinely fears Celestia and does not wish to challenge them, a completely opposite attitude from Zhongli, Ei, and Venti who hold resentment towards the divine.

Genshin Impact Fontaine Lore: Previous Hydro Archon, “Lord of Amrita”

Just like all other original Archons, Lord of Amrita ascended as the Hydro Archon after winning the Archon War. As stated by the Lochfolk, the Lord of Amrita is described to be a kind and sweet individual who wanted the Lochfolk to spy across Teyvat in order to connect with everyone.

Lord of Amrita died during the Cataclysm that occurred 500 years ago. She, among the many Gods that followed suit, journeyed through Tunigi Hollow in order to battle the Abyss forces. Unfortunately during the battle, she was slain and corrupted by the Abyss.

As a result, her body was turned into a pool of pure dew that called the Amrita Pool. Afterward, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata used the Amrita Pool to grow the Harvisptokhm which allowed the Lord of Amrita’s consciousness to remain within the mortal realm. The Harvisptokhm acts as a seal to absorb the corruption and defilement of the Abyss at Tunigi Hollow.

As of now, the Lockfolk who used to reside in Fontaine with the previous Hydro Archon, have all left their homes when Focalors ascended to power. They have a clear distaste and resentment towards the current Hydro Archon and are loyal to the Lord of Amrita. This is why almost all Lochfolks abandoned their homes and are presiding away from Fontaine.

Genshin Impact Fontaine Lore: Judicial and Political System

Fontaine is a nation that operates on a Judicial System. Despite the region’s identity as a center for art, culture, and technology, the bureaucracy is underscored by its complex and frequently changing rules and regulations. The confusion caused by these rules, combined with the lengthy paperwork processes, can create difficulties for the general population.

Understanding the administrative requirements become crucial to avoid legal consequences in Fontaine’s bureaucratic environment, such as being in the Courtroom due to such charges. This is to say, the Court of Fontaine is subjected to many court proceedings as a result. Focalors as stated by Nahida, don’t really get involved with court proceedings. But she does maintain the right to alter the verdict of a trial if she so chooses, and she does like to basically watch every trial.

Although Focalors is only limited to observing the trials, there is a Chief Justice who does look over the court proceedings. It is said that Neuvillette, the Chief Justice of the Court of Fontaine (Ludex) is a very powerful person with an imposing presence and status.

Genshin Impact Fontaine Infrastructure Lore: Aquabus Lines

Fontaine being the Nation of Hydro has a unique regional environment that mostly resides on big pools of water, which is why there are several Aquabus lines reaching various destinations. There are 3 aquabus lines in Fontaine.

  • The Clementine Line, which links the Romaritime Harbor with the Main Station.
  • The Navia Line, which leads to Erinnyes.
  • The Callas Line, which originally led to the Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering.

The tour guides are these adorable creatures called “Melusine”. They originally hail from a secluded village. Although they are tiny beings, the Melusines are born with a powerful sight that enables them to see what human beings cannot perceive. This is why they can easily find the traces of bad guys which is exactly why most employees of the Marechaussee Phantom are Melusines. The Marechaussee Phantom is a special detective force that reports directly to the ludex, also known as the Chief Justice of Fontaine (Neuvillette).

Genshin Impact Fontaine Environmental History: Great Floodings

There is a certain plate elevation as soon as you arrive in Fontaine. Under the influence of a mysterious power, the entire continental plate of Fontaine is elevated which is a huge difference in height compared to other nations of Teyvat. This is exactly why Fontaine has a massive waterfall of over 300 meters high.

Due to the plate elevation, Fontaine’s sea level is not in line with the other nations. After the great flood that took place, there was repeated submerging and rebuilding. Although we can discover submerged ruins of the old city. The lore surrounding the supposed floodings that occurred has not been revealed yet, leading us to believe that the lore will be unveiled once we play through Fontaine.

What are the existing problems Fontaine is facing currently?

1. Fontaine’s Current Energy Problems

Fontaine is very invested in technological development, especially through the use of machinery.  This use of heavy machinery implies that they need a rather reliable energy source. There is a special Energy System in Fontaine.  The founder of the Fontaine Research Institute, Alain Guillotin, invented energy blocks providing power via controlled pnruma-ousia annihilation reactions over 400 years ago which is the basis of most of Fontaine’s Clockwork Meka today.

While in the areas where the people of Fontaine live and have fun such as the Court of Fontaine and Erinnyes, the main energy source is “Indemnitium”. This type of energy source serves as a source of energy for daily needs including lighting and transportation tools of various kinds and it powers all sorts of facilities in the city.

Indemnitium is particularly generated during the process of “Judgment” by a machine called the “Oratrice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale”. This machine harvests people’s belief in justice and converts it into energy. This explains why Fontainians are so enthusiastic about judgments. The judgments in Fontaine are not as solemn as it seems.

The name of the trial court is “Opera Epiclese” which hints at its nature. Court hearings are public events of utmost importance in Fontaine but they have also been generalized and turned into entertainment. Several limited events and NPCs have stated that currently, Fontaine is suffering from energy problems. With the reveal that the energy is generated through people’s belief in justice and judgment, we can assume that the people of Fontaine have their beliefs wavered.

2. Classism Issues in Fontaine

There have been several mentions of a social Hierarchy at play in Fontaine, with the Version 4.0 sneak peek further proving this point. In the Court of Fontaine, there is the exquisite and elegant upper district, the lively residential district. This district is on the surface with Fontainians experiencing a better standard of living. On the other hand, the lower district is characterized by poverty and disorder. Fontainians of the lower district reside underground and are forced to struggle through their lives.

Speculation on the upcoming Future

The upcoming Archon Quest surrounding Fontaine seems to hint towards a conflict within the Court of Fontaine, judging by the trailer of Version 4.0. It appears as though the Traveler may be wrongly framed or accused of something to which they will be brought into trial to seek judgment.

As a result, there will be a clash of characters being either against the Traveler or advocating for the Traveler. Navia has already been established to be an ally for the Traveler as we help her solve an ‘important case’. Other than that, it seems as though the main focus of the whole story will surround the prophecy that is recently been circulating about the fate of Fontaine and its Hydro Archon.
