Because drivers from Canada and Mexico can bring their vehicles into the United States for one duty-free year for personal use, I find the occasional Canadian- or Mexican-market machine in the car graveyards of Colorado. Earlier this week, we admired a 2017 Renault Duster that began its career in Mexico and ends it in Denver. Today, here's another French car that took a similar journey.
Peugeot's final new cars sold in the United States were 1991 models, after moving quite a few 504s and 505s here during the 1970s and 1980s. This means the company founded by Armand Peugeot held on in America for three more years than the one founded by Louis Renault and 16 more years than the one founded by André Citroën.
The 407 was sold from the 2004 through 2012 model years, and was available as a sedan, coupe, and wagon. More than a million were built.
The registration stickers show this 2006 car came from the State of Mexico—Mexico City more specifically. That's just over 1700 miles from Denver, or about 29 hours of driving.
The original sales receipt was still in the car when I found it. The out-the-door price, at a dealership in Mexico City, was 349,000 pesos—that amounts to around $41,200 in 2023 US dollars.
This is the most powerful engine available in the 407: a 3.0-liter 24-valve V6, with 208 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Obviously, nothing on this car will fit anything sold in the United States, so we can expect most of its parts to go straight to the crusher.
Other cars are just flimsy toys, compared to the mighty 407.
