• Gran Turismo is scheduled to hit your local theater on August 11, 2023.
  • The film follows racer and GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough from his sim-racing days to his real-life racing career.
  • The film also stars Stranger Things star David Harbor as the GT Academy driver trainer.

Adapting video games to the big screen is hardly a new concept, and, surprise, the results don’t always doesn’t work out too well.

The folks at Sony, however, have leaned into its racing game legacy and are tossing it up to the silver screen. It makes sense that fans are quaking over a possible Super Mario Brothers-esque outcome, but it should be noted this isn’t a video game-to-film adaptation, per se, but the telling of Jann Mardenborough’s story and his journey through the Nissan GT Academy.

That should be reassuring news for Gran Turismo fans. This story follows Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough through his racing journey. The film also stars David Harbor from Stranger Things as Jack Salter, who oversees training the racers in the GT Academy.

While we’re heartened to learn this isn’t going to be some abstract interpretation of a video game, the movie’s trailer doesn’t make it seem like it’s going to wow its core audience of sim racers. Though the trailer does show Mardenborough’s horrific crash at the Nürburgring, the film won’t skirt away from the protagonist’s real-life struggles.

You might also notice that the Trailer likely covers most of the film’s plot points. Considering this film is based on a true story, you shouldn’t expect too many surprises along the way. Regardless, the trailer should hold you off until the film’s August 11 release date.
