In California during the early 1980s, turbocharging and facial hair were in. I managed to grow a halfway decent mustache as an East Bay high schooler during that era, though my '69 Toyota Corona wasn't turbocharged (to put it mildly). Those California car shoppers who bought a new Toyota in 1982 were fortunate enough to get a special manual to explain their more-complex emission-control hardware and Toyota's "We-Really-Care" service.
A few days ago, I drove 70 miles to photograph an ultra-rare 1982 Toyota Cressida station wagon at a junkyard near Pikes Peak, and I found all the original manuals and paperwork still in the glovebox. The car was purchased new at Lou Webb's Toyota in Hawaiian Gardens, California, and so it got this Golden State-only book along with the regular 49-state owner's manual. We'll see this car as a future Junkyard Treasure, but for now we must admire the soup-strainers on the gentlemen in the water-colored cover illustration.
